High rates of diabetes in NZ

NZPA | Monday, June 27, 2011 8:16

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of diabetes among developed countries, according to an international study.

The study, which was carried out by an international team of researchers working with the World Health Organisation, found that New Zealand was among the top five nations in the world where blood glucose levels indicated diabetes was the highest.

The findings did not come as a surprise to Diabetes New Zealand president Chris Baty, who lieved the Government needed to make diabetes prevention a priority.

This country also had one of the highest levels of obesity, and more needed to be done to encourage physical education and teach nutritional education in schools, Ms Baty said.

Jim Mann, University of Otago professor of nutrition and medicine, said there was no specific public health programme in New Zealand to deal with the obesity problem.

Obesity and diabetes were intrinsically linked - Type 2 diabetes, the most common type, was linked with obesity and a sedentary lifestyle, he said.

The latest figures on diabetes in New Zealand would be released in the national nutrition survey later this year, Professor Mann said.

Pacific Island nations were the most at risk, with the highest diabetes levels in the world, the international study found.

A third of all women and a quarter of all men in the Marshall Islands have diabetes.

The increase in diabetes was highest in North America and comparably small in Western Europe.

The United States, Greenland, Malta, New Zealand and Spain had the highest diabetes and blood glucose levels, while the Netherlands, Austria and France had the lowest.

Sub-Saharan Africa had the lowest glucose levels internationally, followed by east and southeast Asia, Radio New Zealand reported.

The study also found that rates of diabetes had either risen or stayed the same in most of the world over the past 30 years.

The number of adults with diabetes worldwide has more than doubled since 1980 to 347 million, which was well over the 285 million prediction.

How can SureSlim help?

Type 2 diabetes treatment requires sufferers to modify their diet by reducing the intake of carbohydrates and saturated fats to both lose weight and maintain healthy weight loss. If glucose remains unacceptably high, your doctor will prescribe tablets to reduce the insulin resistance and stimulate the pancreas to work harder.

In many cases of long standing Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas cannot maintain insulin production and insulin injections become necessary.

You can help to prevent Type 2 diabetes and reduce diabetes symptoms generally by:

  • Controlling your weight
  • Maintaining a body mass index (BMI) of no more than 25
  • Taking part in physical activity
  • Introducing a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables & minimal
  • Refined starches
  • Stopping smoking
  • When you join SureSlim, you will be tested for diabetes as part of your weight loss assessment. We’ll also show you how to make changes in your lifestyle to minimize the effects of diabetes or reduce your chances of contracting the disease altogether.

The Effect of the SureSlim Program on Type 2 Diabetes

    SureSlim D2 Study
    January 2007

I am sure you will all have read about the type 2 diabetes epidemic and its growing impact on the health of New Zealanders. In 1996, 82,000 adult Kiwis were affected by type 2 diabetes. Today, it is estimated that 105,000 are affected. The worrying thing is that another 105,000 are thought to have the disease but are as yet undiagnosed.

Diabetes damages blood vessels that can lead to complications such as heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, blindness and limb problems such as leg ulcers and gangrene. We know from large international studies that good control of diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure can reduce the incidence of these complications.

With this in mind, we decided to study the effect of the SureSlim diet on people with type 2 diabetes. We have called it the D2 study. We started the study in December 2005 and the results have been published of the 31 subjects who have reached the 6 month stage.

We enlisted Dr Kerry O'Brien, an independent health researcher based at the University of Wollongong. Dr O'Brien has a special interest in obesity research and in particular, the psychological effects of obesity and weight loss. He helped to devise the D2 study to investigate the effects of the SureSlim program on weight loss, diabetic control, cholesterol levels and blood pressure as well as the quality of life of type 2 diabetics.

The results reveal statistically significant weight loss and blood sugar improvements after 3 and 6 months on the program. There were also reductions in cholesterol levels and blood pressure. This is very promising as improving these factors can help to reduce diabetes complications.

We also found that as subjects progressed through the SureSlim program, significant improvements were seen in all measures of diabetes quality of life. Subjects reported increased awareness of their disease, feeling better about their overall health and more in control of their diabetes. There was a 17% improvement in anxiety and worry, a 25% improvement in energy levels and even a 33% improvement in sexual function!

The big question - how much is too much? Our brain takes 20mins to register our stomach is full, so we have often already overeaten before realising we’ve had enough.

Taking smaller bites and chewing more thoroughly can help to discourage over eating, as can eating the right kinds of foods.

Here is where SureSlim can help you. We take the guess work out of portion control and tell you what amounts of which type of foods is going to result in your successful weight loss without you going hungry.

Unfortunately being told by parents that you cannot leave the table until you’ve finished your plate has left many of us with the seemingly unbreakable habit that contributes to weight gain. Fortunately at SureSlim we can help you overcome this habit with different tips and advice, and you will find the meals large and so satisfying that you won’t feel the need to go for seconds.

Because the portion size is directly related to what your body needs (rather than a pre-packed meal for example) you get exactly the right amount & you know exactly what you’re eating because YOU have chosen it!
